SCIENCE CLUB DID IT AGAIN!
On Tuesday, January 12, 2010 the Science Club went to Union County College to compete in Science Olympiad. The Olympiad team consisted of 8th graders Brianna Smith, Nathanael Paige, and Harshita Sahay, and 7th graders Mikhail Velez, Jamill Monroe-Mendez, Aaliyah Brown, Georgina Denis, Travis Smith, Michael Smith, and Karleidy Estevez. The students competed as one of 21 middle schools in a total of 13 events from a variety of disciplines including Anatomy, Can’t Judge a Powder, Compute This, Disease Detective, Dynamic Planet, Ecology, Elevated Bridge, Fossils, Meteorology, Road Scholar, Solar System, Wright Stuff, and Write It Do It. CJCP’s team took honors in two different events. The Elevated Bridge, built by Karleidy Estevez and Jamill Monroe-Mendez, supported a total of 13.9 kilograms of sand, placing their bridge fourth overall! The Wright Stuff event, which involved a balsa wood airplane built by Travis Smith and Michael Smith, was a competition to see how long the planes would stay up in the air. After a few mishaps and a broken plane, CJCP’s plane soared for an astonishing 37 seconds! This once again placed CJCP at number four in the rankings. Science Club advisors Mr. Biyikli and Ms. Plasket are very proud of their team and would like to thank Mr. Yildiz, Mr. E. Yilmaz, and the parents of the Science Club members especially for Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Ms Paige, Ms.Sol and Mr Niteen for all their support the past few months.
